Revisiting a game I used to be scared of: Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure DS

Let me first build up a little context.

My very first game console was a pink DS Lite, bundled with Nintendogs.

My father, who at the time was an avid pirate, soon got me a flashcart to go with it. Me, being 7, and not really knowing of what DS games are out there, I was happy with just my virtual doggy game, but I still was extastic to find out that my father had downloaded some games for me onto the before mentioned flashcart. He loaded it up with some stuff a 7 year old might enjoy: games featuring dora the explorer, that diego cousin guy, my little pony, littlest pet shop, and other similar franchises… And of course, also plenty of games catering to my obsessions at the time: horses, dinos, dragons, and I suppose just animals in general.

If you’re curious, here’s a list of the favourites I can remember: (some of them I’d today still claim are really good games!)

  • Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
  • How To Train Your Dragon DS
  • Go, Diego, Go! Great Dinosaur Rescue
  • Littlest Pet Shop: City Friends
  • Littlest Pet Shop: Garden
  • Bomberman Land Touch!

Well… Some of the games he loaded onto there I touched once and NEVER again, because I was TERRIFIED of them. Three of them, to be exact.

First was… Animal Crossing Wild World. Yes, indeed: whatever the hell in that game could’ve scared me so bad that I never wanted to even think about it again?

It was Resetti. Being a dumb kid, I didn’t save properly, and I got yelled at by him. For some reason the idea of a video game character being mad at me was horrifying to me as a child. I didn’t even understand what I’ve done to deserve it!

Second was Dragonology. For some reason, when I tried to boot it I would be greeted with a sudden extremely loud, high pitched, continuous beep. I do think I did manage to successfully boot it one or two times, but the game’s atmosphere was… really eerie.

Third was… Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure. I don’t exactly remember what I was afraid of in that game. I do recall getting a game over a couple times…

I remembered this game today, and thought it might be interesting to play it, with all the GAMING EXPERIENCE I have now!

I really like the presentation of it so far. It’s cute. Reminds me of my own pixel art style.

Reading up a bit on the game, the reason it’s subtitled “A Musical Adventure” is because it is a musical! There are actual songs with vocals in here. Nowadays, that’s probably not a huge deal, but this game was originally released on the Playstation back in 1999.

I’ll get back to you guys in a later post with more thoughts on the game. But so far I really really like it! I haven’t yet found anything that I could’ve potentially been afraid of…

Oh, and starting from now on, we at DRAKONIC will try our best to sign off our posts with info on who wrote it!
